KNOISE is a co-monitoring sound service for smart cities. On the one hand it helps citizens gain awareness and new behaviours to protect themselves from disturbing sounds. On the other helps the city to map data and act against noise pollution.
The population density of smart cities is increasing drastically, consequently noise pollution is growing. Citizens have no concrete tools to learn how to protect themselves from the threats that exposure to noise can cause. Knoise is a co-monitoring service that tackles the problem of noise pollution in smart cities, to decrease the health effects that noise can have on citizens. To achieve its goal, it helps citizens gain awareness and adopt new behaviors to protect themselves from disturbing sounds. Simultaneously, it assists the city in mapping data about noise to better act against the problem.
The first important step is to sensitise citizens with the issue of noise pollution by raising their awareness about the topic. With the Knoise Experience citizens can understand the risks of noise exposure on their health, through an interactive experience based on embodied learning.
In order to motivate citizens to behave correctl KNOISE is strategically placed in points where people are sensitive to acoustically healthy environments. Systems are installed in transport vehicles that act on the noise through multisensory feedback, naturally decreasing the noise level.
To take concrete action, KNOISE maps city sound data to help citizens and institutions take a stand. Through the app it is possible to track personal noise exposure, find sound safe spaces in the city and contribute with noise reports.
